Indexation management controls which pages Google includes in its index and how many of your pages are actually discoverable in search. Without active management, sites accumulate thousands of low-value indexed pages that waste crawl budget and dilute rankings.

Index Coverage Categories

Status Meaning Action
Valid (Indexed) Page is in Google’s index and eligible for search Monitor for performance
Excluded Google chose not to index the page Determine if intentional or a problem
Error Google encountered an error crawling or indexing Fix immediately — 5xx, 4xx, redirect errors
Warning Indexed but with issues that may affect performance Investigate and resolve

Pages That Should NOT Be Indexed

  • Parameter variations: Product pages with color/size filters — canonical to the main page
  • Internal search results: /search?q=keyword pages provide no unique value
  • Admin and utility pages: Login, cart, account pages
  • Paginated archives: /page/2/, /page/3/ — use rel=next/prev or noindex
  • Tag and author archives: Often create thin, duplicate content
  • Auto-generated pages: CMS-created pages with no meaningful content

Tools for Indexation Control

  • Robots meta tag (noindex): Prevents a specific page from being indexed while allowing crawling
  • Robots.txt: Prevents crawling of entire URL patterns (but doesn’t guarantee de-indexing)
  • Canonical tags: Consolidates duplicate pages to a preferred version
  • XML sitemaps: Explicitly list pages you want indexed and their priority
  • URL Removal Tool: Temporarily removes URLs from search results (GSC)
  • IndexNow: Proactively notifies search engines when pages are added, updated, or removed

Indexation Monitoring

  1. Check Google Search Console Index Coverage report weekly
  2. Compare indexed URLs (site:yourdomain.com) to your submitted sitemap count
  3. Track the ratio of indexed pages that receive organic traffic (coverage efficiency)
  4. Set up alerts for sudden drops in indexed pages (potential de-indexation issues)
  5. Audit new page types before launch to set correct indexation directives

Indexation Audit Process

  • Crawl your site and compare all discovered URLs against your sitemap
  • Cross-reference with GSC indexed pages data
  • Identify pages in the index that shouldn’t be (noindex or remove)
  • Identify high-value pages NOT in the index (fix blockages)
  • Clean up orphaned pages with no internal links pointing to them

Active indexation management ensures that Google focuses its crawl and ranking resources on your most valuable pages. A clean index is a productive index — every indexed page should have a purpose and a chance to earn traffic.
